Tattoos often carry deep personal meanings, representing significant moments, beliefs, or inspirations in one’s life. For me, the decision to get my first tattoo was not made lightly; it was inspired by a profound piece of wisdom that resonates with my core beliefs and aspirations.
The verse, “न मे द्वेषरागौ न मे लोभमोहौ, मदो नैव मे नैव मात्सर्यभावः”, is from the Nirvana Shatakam, composed by the great Indian philosopher Adi Shankara.
Translated, the verse means:
“Neither do I have Hatred nor Attachment; Neither Greed nor Infatuation; Neither do I have Pride; nor Feelings of Envy and Jealousy.”
This line encapsulates a state of mind that is free from the clutches of negative emotions—hatred, attachment, greed, infatuation, pride, envy, and jealousy. It speaks of a serene, unattached, and liberated state of being, one that I strive to embody in my daily life.

Why This Verse?
In a world where we are constantly bombarded with distractions and emotions, getting caught up in the whirlwind of desires, fears, and ego is easy. The verse serves as a reminder to rise above these transient feelings, seek inner peace, and cultivate a balanced and centred mind.
Adi Shankara’s teachings have always been a source of inspiration for me. His emphasis on the world’s transient nature and the soul’s eternal nature has guided me through various phases of my life. This particular verse, however, struck a deeper chord, resonating with my journey toward self-awareness and spiritual growth.
The Tattoo as a Daily Reminder
By choosing to inscribe this verse on my body, I have made it a permanent reminder of my commitment to these ideals. It is more than just ink on skin; it is a symbol of my dedication to living a life guided by wisdom, free from the chains of negativity and emotional turbulence.
Every time I look at my tattoo, I am reminded to practice detachment from the fleeting emotions that can cloud my judgment. It encourages me to cultivate a calm and composed demeanour, navigate life’s challenges gracefully, and maintain a sense of equanimity regardless of external circumstances.
In essence, this tattoo is not just a representation of my beliefs but also a tool for personal growth. It is a constant companion in my journey towards a more enlightened and liberated self.
